Clinical Pathways Development for Early Stage Breast Cancer: A 2011 Update of Tumor Markers and Their Use in the Community

Activity Date(s):
07/08/2011 - 12/31/2012

Media:
Audio/slides with interactive questions. Printable PDF also available.

Target Audience
This activity is intended for physicians, pharmacists, nurses, and case managers from health plans, hospitals, provider groups, government programs, and other organizations with an interest in pharmacoeconomics and health policy development. It may also be useful to other clinicians and researchers working with public or private payers.

Statement of Need
Recently, the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) released new guidance on the use of breast cancer tumor markers in breast cancer management strategies. Specifically, they provided new guidance on the role of molecular diagnostics in breast cancer treatment planning. These markers can provide a more comprehensive understanding of underlying tumor biology leading to a more individualized approach in order to direct therapy. This activity aims to review recent data relevant to risk stratification of women with early breast cancer based on risk for distal recurrence and likelihood of response to adjuvant therapy in the context of recently released NCCN guidelines and other recent updates.

Educational Objectives
Upon completion of this educational activity, participants will be able to:

  • Describe some of the evidence behind the NCCN and ASCO guidelines on the management of early breast cancer related to tumor markers.
  • Create a clinical pathway that addresses the use of gene expression assays in early breast cancer.
  • Determine the appropriateness of multi-gene assays in supporting adjuvant therapy recommendations in early breast cancer.

Agenda

  • Early Breast Cancer Treatment planning (15 minutes)
  • Rationale and Evidence for the Use of Genetic Biomarkers (10 minutes)
  • Clinical Pathways; Advantages, Challenges and Guidance (15 minutes)
  • Update of 2010-2011 clinical data and guidelines (15 minutes)
  • Evaluation (5 minutes)
